6th Semi-Annual
Biotechnological Russian-American Innovation Technology Week
Country Seminar on Russia at
BIO-2007
“The Rise of Biotechnology in Russia”
International
Program: International Country Seminars
Room #254 AB,
Boston Convention & Exhibition Center
Sunday, May 6, 2007, 4:00-5:30pm
Russia has historically been a
strong player in the biotechnology industry and today it offers
an attractive environment for research, development and
manufacturing. The Russian biotechnology industry benefits from
a highly qualified workforce – one of the best in the world –
and the presence of more than 1,000 institutions and
organizations conducting biotechnology research.
Active research work is being
carried out in
Russia in such
areas as biosafety and biosecurity, biodiversity, renewables and
biocatalysis, bionanotechnology and systems biology.
The Russian state has provided
additional support to the industry by launching a national
program to encourage public-private cooperation entitled
“Biotechnological Development in Russia in 2006 – 2015.”
Included in the program are plans to support science centers and
to support regions of Russia that emphasize biotechnology and
other scientific endeavors.
As a result of
these efforts, the annual volume of biotech investments in
Russia in 2007-2008 is expected to double in comparison with
2005-2006. This seminar
will highlight the opportunities Russia offers and the
innovative work being performed by the Russian biotechnology
industry.
Objectives:
-
Learn
about implications of Russia’s “National Program for
Biotechnology Development 2006 – 2015,” which prioritizes
the creation of special economic zones for innovative
biotechnology, creation of biotechnoparks, expansion of
biosafety and nanotechnology industries and establishment of
biotechnology investment and venture funds.
-
Discuss
emerging opportunities related to special economic zones and
biotechnology parks in Russia.
-
Consider
opportunities for international cooperation with the Russian
biotechnology industry.
