The Mid-Atlantic-Russia Business Council Host
11th and 12th Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Weeks

 

Philadelphia, PA - The Mid-Atlantic – Russia Business Council (MARBC) will host the 11th Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT) in the Mid-Atlantic States from November 16-20, 2009 and the 12th RANIT from April 28 - May 7, 2010. The Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week is designed to bring together entrepreneurs, scientists, venture capitalists, and established corporations from the American and Russian technology communities. Based on past success, RANIT is now held twice a year, and includes an even greater number of regional technology events, seminars, panel discussions, roundtable meetings, trade shows, conferences, and networking events. Russian delegations representing the foremost Russian technology companies will take part in the various regional technology events of RANIT.

RANIT is supported by leading regional businesses and governmental organizations, including the administrations of the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and the States of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, as well as Mid-Atlantic regional organizations focusing on international business and technology development. Since 2003, the Mayor of Philadelphia has proclaimed the third week of November to be the Russian-American Innovation Technology Week in Philadelphia.

The 11th Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week will be held from November 16-20, 2009. The 11th Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week will focus on information technology, alternative energy technology, nanotechnology, robotics, chemical engineering, safety and security technologies, technology in education, venture capital, and entrepreneurship. Following the opening ceremonies in the Mayor’s Reception Room at Philadelphia City Hall, the Biennial Russian-American Business Opportunities Symposium will be held. Taking place within the framework of the 11th RANIT, the Symposium will focus on regional cooperation, while also including discussions on the challenges of doing business in Russia and opportunities in specific industrial sectors.

The 11th RANIT will once again include an extensive MARBC-organized Russian program at Philadelphia ITEC. The Philadelphia ITEC is part of the nation’s largest series of regional business technology events for IT and business professionals, featuring a combination of national vendors and local suppliers, and a conference program with seminars on the newest issues in information technology. The Mid-Atlantic - Russia Business Council will organize the participation of Russian companies in the exhibition and will also present a panel discussion entitled “Thinking Globally in Today’s Economic Environment and How To Expand Globally in an IT Market,” as well as a panel discussion focusing on the Russian information technology industry and opportunities for Russian-American cooperation in the IT field.

Building upon the past success of the Russian Chemical Industry delegations organized by MARBC, there will be chemical industry events included in the 11th RANIT. Another leading event will be the 5th Annual Russian-American Technology Entrepreneurship Conference. Additionally, there will be a RANIT-associated program on technology in education organized by the MARBC. The program will present multiple opportunities for furthering communication and cooperation between Russian and American universities. These events are a part of the International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, as well as a part of the Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Additional events during the 11th Russian - American Innovation Technology Week will include a visit to other states in the Mid-Atlantic region, a visit and roundtable at the International Incubator at the Science Center, and a reception at the Pyramid Club in Philadelphia.

The 12th Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week, organized by the Mid-Atlantic – Russia Business Council, will begin with a welcoming ceremony and conference in the Mayor’s Reception Room at Philadelphia City Hall on April 29th. Keynote speakers at the welcoming ceremony and conference will include presidents of American and Russian biotechnology associations as well as Russian mayors and Mid-Atlantic state officials. The Russian delegation will also visit the International Incubator at the Science Center, participate in a roundtable on the commercialization of nanotechnologies and a seminar on venture capital funds specializing in biotechnology, and meet with members of biotechnology associations from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

The 12th Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week conclude with the 2010 BIO International Convention from May 3-6, 2010 at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago, with an extensive Russian program organized by the Mid-Atlantic – Russia Business Council. The MARBC is the official organizer of the Russian delegation at BIO, which is the largest and most significant biotechnology event in the world. A Russian exposition will display information on the vast array of Russian science and technology capabilities in biotechnology and related industries. During BIO’s International Day the MARBC will present the Russian biotechnology industry, discussing the most promising achievements of Russian scientists and manufacturers in the biotechnology field as well as pressing issues concerning Russian-American biotechnology cooperation.

Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT – BIO)


April 28 - May 6, 2010

Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT) brings together entrepreneurs, scientists, venture capitalists, and established corporations within the American and Russian technology industries. RANIT, organized by the Mid-Atlantic - Russia Business Council (MARBC), is the most significant semi-annual event devoted to Russian-American technology and business cooperation. Based on past success, RANIT is now held twice a year, and includes an increasing number of regional technology events, seminars, panel discussions, roundtable meetings, trade shows, conferences, and networking events. The 10th RANIT will highlight biotechnology and nanotechnology, and will conclude with participation in the world’s largest biotechnology exhibition, the 2010 BIO International Convention in Chicago. The Russian delegation that will take part in the 12th RANIT-BIO will consist of representatives from the foremost Russian companies in biotechnology and related industries. The Russian delegation, including executives from regions in Russia with strong connections to these industries, will take part in key RANIT events.

A few recent developments have made biotechnology cooperation between Russia and the Mid-Atlantic states particularly attractive. First, the Russian government has drafted a “National Program for the Development of Biotechnology in Russia until 2015,” which emphasizes the regional development of bioclusters. Second, state governments in the Mid-Atlantic region have enacted favorable policies that have further enhanced the region’s standing as a leader in the field of biotechnology. Further strengthening commercial ties between the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region and Russia, in 2008 Pennsylvania became the first U.S. state to open a trade office in Russia. Within this context the MARBC has made Russian-American scientific and technical cooperation in biotechnology one of its top priorities. MARBC has facilitated American participation in several of the most significant biotechnology conferences and events in Russia, including the EurasiaBIO, held at the Moscow World Trade Center, and the International Congress “Biotechnology: State of the Art and Prospects of Development,” which are held in the House of the Moscow Government.

12th RANIT-BIO will begin in Philadelphia and Washington on April 28-30, 2010

Starting in Philadelphia, special events at RANIT-BIO will include a welcoming ceremony and conference in the Mayor’s Reception Room at Philadelphia City Hall on April 28th. Mid-Atlantic - Russia Business Council (MARBC) has played an important role in previous years at BIO International Convention, serving as the official organizer of the Russian delegation to BIO 2005, BIO 2006, BIO 2007, BIO 2008, and BIO 2009, as part of MARBC’s undertaking to build a bridge between the Russian and American biotechnology communities. The Russian business program at BIO 2005 was organized in the context of the Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT), and included a Russian mini-pavilion and participation by members of the Russian delegation in various events of BIO 2005. At BIO 2006 in Chicago, as well as at BIO 2007 in Boston and at BIO 2009 in Atlanta, MARBC organized a Country Seminar on Russia featuring panel discussions and presentations from leading experts on doing business in Russia. MARBC also presented the Russian biotechnology industry in the International Marketplace during the conference’s International Day.

GENERAL COUNTRY DESCRIPTION:
Russia has historically been a strong player in the biotechnology industry and today it offers an attractive environment for research, development and manufacturing. The Russian biotechnology industry benefits from a highly qualified workforce – one of the best in the world – and the presence of more than 1,000 institutions and organizations conducting biotechnology research in such areas as biosafety and biosecurity, biodiversity, renewables and biocatalysis, bionanotechnology and systems biology. With 16% of the GNP and 10% of Russia’s workforce concentrated in this area, the knowledge-based bioeconomy is one of Russia’s major priorities.

Russia has provided additional support to the industry by launching a national program, “Biotechnological Development in Russia in 2006 – 2015,” to encourage public-private cooperation. The program supports science centers and regions of Russia that emphasize biotechnology and other scientific endeavors. Consequently, the annual volume of biotech investments in Russia in 2007-2008 nearly doubled in comparison with 2005-2006. The innovative work performed by the Russian biotechnology industry offers tremendous opportunities. Russia also provides significant opportunities in the fields of manufacturing, research and development, and innovative biotechnologies.

BRIEF ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Since 1994, Mid-Atlantic – Russia Business Council (MARBC; www.ma-rbc.org) fosters business relations between Russia & the CIS and the US Mid-Atlantic region. REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION:
Russia has focused on establishing special economic zones for innovative biotechnology, as well as the creation of biotech parks. Development of state programs in special economic zones to create an enabling environment for the development of bio-safety, nanotechnology, and biotechnology in Russia have included regional biotechnology programs in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Novosibirsk-Tomsk, Saratov, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Kirov, amongst others. Russian specialists in the physicochemical biology and biotechnology industries are extremely well qualified and over 1,000 Russian institutions and organizations conduct research in these areas.

BUSINESS CLIMATE:
Historically, Russia has had a well-developed biology and biotechnology industry and is currently emerging from its transitional period as a leading producer of many biotechnology items including immunobiological medications, veterinary products, and environmental protection technology. Russia has provided additional encouragement to further advance this industry by launching a national program, “Biotechnological Development in Russia in 2006 – 2015,” which supports science centers and regions of Russia that emphasize biotechnology and other scientific endeavors. Russia has been experiencing significant growth in the field of analytical instrument manufacturing and increasing demand for its advanced technical skills. As global concern for biosafety and for the preservation of biodiversity has increased, there has been a greater demand for Russian expertise in cell technologies, bioinformatics, post-genome technologies (proteomics, metabolomics), and nanotechnologies. Major driving forces in Russia’s biotech activity include Biotechnology Associations such as the Russian Society of Biotechnologist, Russian Bioindustry Union, Russian National Biofuels Association, as well as regional governments. The tendency to establish bioregions in Russia can be strengthened through international cooperation with related bioregions in Europe, North America, and East Asia, and productive mechanisms for partnerships with Russian/CIS scientists. Executives of Russian biotechnology and biofuels associations to BIO will represent the rapid developments of the Russian biotechnology industry, including the expansion to new bioclusters, such as biofuels and bionanotechnology, as well as biosafety and biomedical devices. These leading Russian companies’ representatives, with on-the- ground expertise in this emerging market, will also be available to further discuss the industry’s latest innovations, challenges, and opportunities for Russian-American cooperation.

SPECIAL INCENTIVES AND PROGRAMS: Russian Venture Company

REGULATION & POLICY:
Biotechnology is considered one of the top priorities in Russia’s economic modernization plan. Both the Russian government and private industry have recognized the need to improve the legal and economic environment for the biotechnology industry. In order to improve coordination between the public and private sectors, the Russian state has launched a national program entitled “Biotechnological Development in Russia in 2006 – 2015.” Following the launch of this Russian national biotechnology development program to encourage public-private cooperation, bioclusters have rapidly expanded in several Russian regions. The program has provided additional support to the Russian biotechnology industry by creating special economic zones for innovative biotechnology, further developing biotechnoparks, expanding biosafety and nanotechnology industries, and establishing biotechnology investment and venture funds. Highlighting the opportunities and innovative work in Russia's growing biotechnology industry, the Russian participation organized by the MARBC to BIO2008 and RANIT-BIO will represent several emerging Russian biotechnology companies, including winners of prestigious national bio-innovation competitions, which have created opportunities in areas ranging from biomedical devices to biofuels development. The MARBC- organized Russian delegation will contribute and discuss practical information about the innovations, challenges, and opportunities for cooperation in one of the biotechnology industry's most important emerging markets.
