World War II On Film - Stories From The Russian Front

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA – The Pennsylvania-Russia Business Council, Mona-Film Company (Moscow), The Russian State Film Archives, Sovexportfilm, and The Russian Arts Society announce their upcoming Directors’ Panel & Press Conference in remembrance of the 60th Anniversary of the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, which marked Russia’s entrance into World War II (June 22, 1941). This event serves as an introduction to the World War II Film Festival that will be held in late July – early August, meant to expose American audiences to the Russian experience during the Second World War and to offer insight into an unfamiliar aspect of Russian national cultural heritage.

 

The Directors’ Panel & Press Conference (to be spoken in Russian in order to accommodate the Russian-speaking press) will begin at 12:00 p.m. on June 26, 2001 in the Circle of Friends Adult Center at 9405 Bustleton Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia. Another Directors’ Panel & Press Conference (to be translated in English in order to accommodate the English-speaking press) will be held at 3:30 p.m. on June 26, 2001 in center city Philadelphia at KYW-TV 3.


This delegation will be lead by officials from the Russian Filmmakers Union.

Included in the Directors’ Panel & Press Conference will be:

 

  • Yevgeny Zharikov – Acclaimed Russian Actor and President of the Russian Film Actors Guild
    *Zharikov has appeared in more than 70 films, including the lead in My Name is Ivan. He was awarded the prestigious People’s Artist
    title in 1979, and has been published frequently in Russian newspapers and magazines.
  • Stanislav Rostotsky – Acclaimed Russian Film Director and Screenwriter
    *Rostotsky studied at The State Cinematography Institute in Moscow. He is a veteran of W.W. II and has directed several films. His film Dawns Here are Quiet (1972) was a box office success and White Bim Black Ear (1970) won the Golden Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival and was nominated for an Academy Award. A popular product of perestroika was his film From the Life of Fyodor Kuzkin (1989).
  • Aleksey Titkov – Historian and Editor-In-Chief of Rossiyskie Vesti (Russian News).
    *Titkov is the grandson of famed W.W. II Soviet General Aleksey Radzievsky, Commander of the Second Tank Division.
  • Yekaterina Filippova – Director General, Mona-Film Company (Moscow)
  • Sabina Yeremeyeva – Director, Mona-Film Company (Moscow)


Note:

In addition to the feature films to be screened in late July – early August, several documentaries will be presented as well. These film and documentary screenings will be shown at the AMC Orleans 8 Theatre, 2247 Bleigh Street in Northeast Philadelphia. Included feature films are Ballad of a Soldier, Trial on the Road, My Name is Ivan, and Dawns Here are Quiet.
