Philadelphia, PA - The America-Israel Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania-Russia Business Council will introduce the issuance of a new joint Israeli-Georgian stamp at a reception to be held at the law offices of Schnader, Harrison, Segal & Lewis, 38th floor, 1735 Market St., Philadelphia, PA in Fall 2002. The reception will be the only event in the U.S. at which these stamps will be displayed. In addition to the display of the stamps, there will be a presentation of the jazz sextet from Georgia with Georgian, Russian, Jewish and American music and a discussion of the background and history of this collaborative issue. In addition, a limited number of stamps will be available for purchase.
This issuance, expresses Israel's appreciation of Georgian heritage while Georgia celebrates the contributions to Georgian history, of its Jewish community, some 2600 years old. Georgia, the most tolerant and pluralistic of the former Soviet states, has a tradition of religious tolerance. Its capital city, Tbilisi, has long been home to a synagogue, church and mosque, all on the same center square.
The Israeli stamp will feature a picture of the Georgian national poet Shota Rustaveli, who lived in the 12th century and wrote the famous Georgian masterpiece "The Man in the Panther's Skin." The Georgian issue will honor Jewish culture in Georgia will a picture of the synagogue in the city of Kutaisi.
This collaboration comes on the heels of another sign of mutual recognition. In May, 2001, Israel awarded the Wolf Prize, which acknowledges achievement in the sciences, to Hebrew University Professor Saharon Shelah and Steklov Mathematical Institute in Moscow's Professor Vladimir Arnold, for their accomplishments in mathematics. The Wolf Prize, was established in 1978 by the late German-born inventor, diplomat and philanthropist, Dr. Ricardo Wolf.
The America-Israel Chamber of Commerce and the Pennsylvania-Russia Business Council are not-for-profit economic development organizations, dedicated to increasing business ties between companies in this region with Israel and Russia and the former Soviet republics.
